Mikis Theodorakis

A Tribute by Stathis Gotsis

It is no secret to all that know me that I am a profound admirer of the music of Mikis Theodorakis so this is from the heart. For 30 years I collect everything I can get my hands on (LP's, CD's and scores) and I think I can "read between the lines" of his music.

For a detailed account of the life and works of Mikis Theodorakis please visit the "Official Mikis Theodorakis Web Page", a labor of love by Guy Wagner. My page will provide midi files and other sound files, a small sample from the works of one of the most prolific composers of all time!

Of course midi files are not the ideal way to have music played but if the midi files are done with good taste and the computers are equipped with wavetable synthesis sound cards the results can be pleasing. The midi files in this page have been remixed for a "Turtle Beach Tropez Plus" soundcard and they might not sound "right" with other soundcards at these settings. It is recommended that new remixing be done with some sequencing program if the sound is "muddy" in some sound cards.

In addition to the recorded songs of the composer, where I tried to emulate the original orchestrations, I am including three songs that have never been recorded before, using my own original orchestrations. So here are three songs of Mikis Theodorakis in World Premiere Performances!

NAET   (from the 3 Negro Songs of Leopold Senghor)

NIGHT OF SINE    (from the 3 Negro Songs of Leopold Senghor)

THE MOTHER OF THE EXILEE   (Poetry of Kostas Kalatzis)

The following songs are old time favorites!

The Young Lad is in Sorrow (Το Παλληκάρι έχει καϋμό)

In this Neighborhood (Σ' αυτή την Γειτονιά)

Theme from "Z"

In the Fields (Στα Περβόλια)

May Day (Μέρα Μαγιού)

Intermezzo from AXION ESTI

The Train

Abduction (Απαγωγή)

Margarita Margaro

Pomegranate Tree (Ροδιά)

My Mother My Madonna (Μάννα μου και Παναγιά)

It is getting Dark (Βραδυάζει)

Παράπονο (Complaint)

Saturday Night (Σαββατόβραδο)

Sylva

The orchestrations and midi realisations are the labor of love of Stathis D. Gotsis, who should at least be asked if these midi files are to be included in some other web pages.

For those who haven't heard the latest CD of Mikis Theodorakis with the composer himself singing, here is a sample in Real Audio format (380 Kbytes), to be opened with Internet Explorer 4.0 and Real Audio 5.0: "I open the Door at Nightfall" from the CD
