Introduction In this page I will display monsters and figures I have worked on, finished or just threw in the trash bin while working on the rpg-project.
The main reason I am doing this is for your feedback. I want to know what the end-user of the game, or the artist inside you thinks about these works, and ideas of how the graphics could become even better.
Tell me what you like or don't, whether you think I should start working back on an idea I dismissed long ago, and what details I could add to make something look nicer or more realistic.
Please bear in mind though, that everything has been done in my spare time, and with completely free software that has limitations.
POV-Ray is a great raytracer. Not a renderer, a modeller or something similar. Everything is written in code.
Hamapatch is a great bicubic patch modeller. It lacks many user-friendly options that mesh-modellers have.
Everything can be done with the above two, but it's just harder to do it ;o)Note1: For feedback please use the rpg-project's official forum. I am not providing an e-mail address since it will be an easy target for spammers.
Note2: I will not be adding any items or objects yet, as these are stationary and thus easily perceived in the generator. Also the items have already a webspace dedicated in the official rpg-project website.
Maybe later on, I will add the buildings, but first I want to see how they will effect the project. So no sneak peak there yet ;o)A few words about me
I've been working on the rpg-project for some years now. When I first joined, by graphics skills were very limited. I had just started using POV-Ray, and I hadn't even heard of hamapatch.
Through time, and further working on the project, I learnt to use POV-Ray more effectively, and thus produce better graphical results. I began using hamapatch through a head modelling tutorial I had found. A hard way to begin learning hamapatch, but it paid off in the end.
Projects Latest
In this section I will present sample works which are complete or near completion and ought to be added to an upcoming version of the RPG-Project.
Several of these have already been added to the project, while others are in the stage of rendering.
Image Description Image Description An Goblin Warrior.
He has the new goblin head, new helmet, shield, weapons and uses new metal textures.A Zombie.
It is the latest undead figure to be added to our bestiary. It has a rotten flesh texture to give the look of decomposition and wears rags.An Orc Warrior.
He has the goblin head, new armour, shield, weapons and uses new metal textures.Another Orc Warrior.
He has the goblin head, new armour, shield, weapons and uses new metal textures. An NPC Warrior.
He has full studded leather, a chainmail skirt and cloth harness. An NPC Knight.
He is a decorated cloth cape that reaches down to the knees.A Lizard Man Warrior.
He has scaled green skin and tail. The tail is intended to move in the final version. An NPC Mage.
He is intended to be non-combat.An NPC Knight.
He has full chainmail armour, a decorated cape and a crown-like helmet with mail coif.An NPC Knight.
He is wearing new type of plate armour and a decorated cape.An NPC Warrior.
He is wearing a sculpted metal cuirass, bracers and a close faced helmet. An NPC Nobleman.
He has extravagant clothes.A Male Farmer NPC.
He is wearing plain clothes.A Female Farmer NPC.
She is wearing a plain dress. An NPC Town Guard Captain.
He has decorated armor and a new helmet decorated with feathers. An NPC Innkeeper.
Notice the new jacket and hair type.An NPC Warrior Monk.
He has fluid cloth at the end of his limbs, and a belt.An NPC Trader.
The textures are used differently this time.An NPC Knight.
He is clad in metal armour. An NPC Barbarian Warrior.
A rough guy heh?An NPC Monk.
He is wearing a new type of cloak. An NPC Rogue.
A Dark leather jacket and boots comprise his outfit. New hair type too.Works In Progress
In this section I will present sample works which are unfinished, and are due to completion in the future.
Image Description Image Description A Goblin's head to be added to the next version of goblins. A Lizard man's head to be added to the new creature set. This is the flying animation of the next generation dragon.
More vivid than the previous ones.Integrated
In this section I will present sample works which have already made it into the project, in an effort to show how the graphics have progressed.
The oldest works are upwards, while the latest towards the bottom of the section.
Image Description Image Description The caveman was one of my first animated figures. The animation is primal, as well as my understanding of it.
The entire figure was done by a conjuction of blobs and isosurfaces, as I had no idea of bicubic patch modelling back then.About at this time, I did a stone golem figure.
I've used some tricks to do the 2 handed weapon animation, as it is hard perceive exact positioning for it.
In the gif section below you can see the entire animation, along with the destruction sequence, which uses Chris Colefax's explode file. This is the second dragon I've designed.
It's done using blobs, spline connection, and hand coded bicubic patches for the wings.
It was hard to be animated, and the animation could be better.
Though it's a very nice creature for stills.Animation Description Animation Description Troll This is the complete troll animation.
I intended it to move slowly, but it's fast due to it's very large step size.Stonegolem This is the complete stonegolem animation. I like the way it crumbles to dust. This is a goblin axeman, as an example file, of the goblin variations.
The goblins were my first detailed figures. I've used different textures and image maps to produce many different goblins.
Unfortunately due to their structure they suffer from difficult animation (it was really hard to get the final result) and an inexpressive face. This is a goblin archer.
I've created this animation sequence, which I later on exported to the newest figures.
Note:The bow isn't my design.Image Description Image Description Dwarf Paladin PC.
This is a dwarf paladin featuring banded mail armour and an open faced helmet. This and figures below, are using the new figure design.
The animation has been expanded upon the basic pc movement files, whereas compressed bicubic patch heads (modelled using hamapatch), patch items and new textures have been provided to add details and variation.Elf Male Warrior PC.
The cuirass has been converted to scale mail armour using Chris Colefax's compressed mesh hair macro file.Elf Female Mage PC.
This is an elf female mage. She has a sim-cloth generated dress done by Kabo.
These dresses move realistically when the figure walks.
I'm pretty sure you've all seen the animated gif files in the official site. If not then don't lose a moment.Elf Female Paladin PC.
Another female elf. She is wearing a cuirass, and banded skirt.Human Male Warrior PC.
This is an iron-clad warrior wearing splint mail armour, a cloak and a crusader helmet.Human Male Paladin PC.
This is a human knight, clad in different armour than the warrior.Abandoned
In this section I will present sample works which were ultimately abandoned either due to lack of skill or lack of motivation. Some include good ideas, which could lead to new works in the future.
Image Description This is the first dragon I've ever designed.
It didn't have a hierarchy structure, so animating it was a nightmare that ended with dropping it and designing a new one from scratch.
Perhaps my first complete POV model. It is done using csg.Modelling a still snake is easy using a spline. But no matter how I tried I failed in the animation. I don't know exactly how they move, so this one was abandoned too. There a few images of abandoned projects I've not added since they are pretty pathetic.
Their ideas still exist though, and with new methods and tools that I use a new creature might spring up later on.
Gargoyles, werewolves, gigantic spiders and more are on queue and they could be done.
Credits Great thanks to:
- The creators of POV-Ray and Hamapatch. Without them none of the works displayed would have been possible.
- To Kabo, without whom the RPG-Project wouldn't have even started. He also provided me with the basis of humanoid figures to work upon.
