The dates and places indicated are, as far as can be determined, the marriage or other relevant dates as found in the text, along with the most logical place mentioned, especially for those wives whose last names are not known (group 1). All spouses are entered, as well as other names of interest as noted, especially second marriages of Stewart widows, since in most instances the Stewart children grew up with their stepfathers and their names might be a useful clue.
Names of in-laws and spouses of non-Stewarts are shown by the formula: "Alden, see Edson".

It is to be hoped that this index will form a useful tool for finding the multiple entries of the Stewart men, and as far as possible corrections that Mr Edson found have been included so that original wrong entries can be found. Wives whose last names were found have been indexed under that name, except for some entries where the conclusion was mostly speculation.
The standard abbreviations for the United States have been used, as well as ENG, IRL, SCT for England, Ireland and Scotland. Everything else should be self-explanatory.
It would be greatly appreciated if any errors found, and there are sure to be some in spite of repeated proof-reading, could be brought to my attention, with thanks.
