ABOUT RETHYMNO

Rethymno is the capital and the administrative, commercial and communication centre of the prefecture of Rethymno, built 80 kilometres east of Heraklion and 60 kilometres west of Chania.
The old town section of Rethymno is almost entirely Venetian. It is one of the best preserved towns in all of Greece. Many buildings from the 1500's, with their arched doorways and stone staircases, are still used. The old town still has narrow streets winding their way down to the harbor.
Today the serenity found in its history is found in town. There is a large city garden where friends, neighbors and guests gather for shade and tranquility. Because of its history, Rethymno has The Fortetza, a Venetian castle that is one of the largest, best preserved castles in all Greece. The Fortetza was built in 1573 to protect the town. Original walls, churches and buildings remain, as does the panoramic, sweeping view of the Mediterranean Sea. It is still possible to walk the harbor wall to an old Venetian lighthouse.
The old town is in close proximity to long, sandy beaches. In fact a ferry delivers visitors right into the old town. In exploring the city, guest have the choice of heading toward the modern, well developed strip of large hotels, or of finding the quiet, intimate places in the more romantic old town.
The town offers all the touristy facilities needed and numerous accommodations of all categories as well as lively bars and clubs and various restaurants and excellent taverns. Rethymno has regular bus services to the main towns and villages of the entire prefecture as well as to the towns of Chania and Heraklion.
Ferries are leaving daily for the harbour of Piraeus and regular boats are leaving to various destinations from the nearby port of Souda.
As for the surrounding province, the difficulty is in deciding what to visit first. The endless beaches, the monasteries and the churches, the ancient sites or the Venetian and Turkish monuments? The area is rich in characteristic villages and areas of great natural beauty, as well as caves and soaring mountains. Of course we cannot forget the local people, famous for their hospitality,
who will befriend you and may even share a glass of "raki" with you
