Installation

To install the speak.plug, simply copy the downlloaded speak.plug  into the directory "c:/.wavesurfer" (for Windows). Wavesurfer looks either there or in a directory "./plugins" within the subdirectory from where it was started.

After you have copied the file to the proper subdirectory, run Wavesurfer. Right click on any transcription pane and go "Properties...". Select the "Pane" tab and select "Mbrola" as "Label file format" and press "Apply".

Enter the path for the mbrola executable (mbrola.exe for Windows) and the voice database that you intend to use. You can optionally use any of the Mbrola parameters (see the Mbrola documentation). The Speak setup properties tab looks like this:

Change the path "e:/speech/mbrola.exe" to point to your mbrola.exe path, and "e:/speech/databases/gr2" to point to the voice database of your preference. Enter any mbrola parameters you need in the parameter box (optionally).

Speak.plug sends to the Mbrola engine the contents of the transcription pane together with any existing prosody. Mbrola produces the file ws.wav which the speak.plug plays to the speakers with Snack.

IMPORTANT: when upgrading to a newer version you must delete the old version of the plugin from your system before copying the new one. Also, since many upgrades involve configuration parameters, you must delete your configuration files that make use of the speak.plug and/or the transcription_format_mbrola.plug.

Use

To play a transcription, just click on a transcription pane, which becomes focused. Clicking on a pwline pane plays the transcription of the focused pane with the prosody existing on the pwline pane.

If you right click on a transcription pane and click "Speak", speak.plug will play your transcription with a prosody played previously.

The voice pitch, shown in a "Pitch contour" pane, can be changed manually. Click on a dot and drag it to the desired position. After changing the pitch contour by hand, you can listen to you changes by clicking "Speak" on this pane as before.

A portion of a pane can be played instead of the whole pane, if selected. Selecting a single label and clicking "Speak" plays just the selected label. Fragments of labels can be played, if selected.

Obviously, if the transcription uses phonemes not understood by Mbrola, an Mbrola error will be presented to you by Wavesurfer. Correct your error and try again.
