Rhodes * Santorini * Corfu
Rhodes (Rodos)
Rhodes is the city with the two
characters. The old town is encircled by mediaval
castles; there are narrow lanes, churches, the
Knights' Castle and the Castello. The Knights'
Hospital, an impressive building of the 15th
century ,now houses the Archaeological Museum and
its rich collection, including the famous Venus
of Rhodes.
The new city extends beyond these suggestive
walls; glamorous hotels and shops full of
characteristic items of Rhodian folk art. Many
cultural events take place in Rhodes during the
summer months.
The Valley of the Butterflies, Filerimos, Kameiros, Kallithea, Faliraki and Lindos with its ancient Acropolis.

The famous Colossus which used to stand in the Port of Rhodes, Mandraki, in Antiquity was one of the seven wonders of the world.

Phera, the capital of the island, perched on a cliff, is connected to the Port of Scala by way of 600 stairs. The visitor can either walk up the hundreds of steps to the main town of Phera, or he can hire a donkey or go by cable car.
One of the most famous islands of the Cyclades. Distance from Piraeus: 130 n. miles. (Some archeologists believe that Santorini was the ancient Atlantis). Santorini is different from the rest of the Cyclades group by virtue of its interesting geological structure, the result of the eruptions of a now inactive volcano.

Corfu is the isle of the Phaeacians as Homer sang, Odysseus last stop on his journey home to Ithaca. It is situated in the North Ionian Sea with only a narrow strait separating it from the mainland opposite, from which it broke away millenia ago during the great geological upheavals. The capital of the island is also called Corfu (Kerkira) and is made up of dissimilar elements, left over from different civilizations. Neapolitan "cantounia" narrow back alleys paved with blocks of stone, houses built in a style that is French, some others have arches and colonnades and still others are in the English Georgian style of architecture. There are Byzantine churches and fortresses, Venetian steps and monuments. All together this unique blend of architectures forms an attractive and fascinating whole.
