**Lavrio **Cape Sounion**

Sounion is one of the most famous and picturesque places in Attica. Southeast of Athens, about an hour's ride, is Sounion with its famous cape where the foundations of a small Temple of Athena Souniaea and the ruins of the temple of Poseidon are located.

Lavrio (or Laurio) has been famous since the ancient years because of the mineral wealth of the area.These mines(deposites of argentiferous lead and silver mines) were the main source of revenues for the ancient state of Athens. Mines were abandoned a few year ago as the deposits thinned out and extraction became more costly and international markets shrank.
